All-Girl Engineering Team Prove Victorious

On 19th January GCHQ’s Engineering STEM day took place at All Saints’ Academy.

The idea of the course is to encourage children into engineering courses.

45 students in Year 10 were selected for the prestigious course.  They were picked out of subjects such as Engineering, Product Design, Science and Maths.  The day course encourages the students to be creative and work as a team.

The main challenge of the day was to build a wind turbine that produces electricity.  The electricity was then measured.

Two of the teams at All Saints’ Academy produced record breaking results for voltage.  The representative associate from Smallpiece Trust said that the voltage produced by these two groups at All Saints’ beat the other 8 schools taking part.

The winning team was judged on design and stability, total cost of producing the end product, teamwork, amount of power generated and aesthetics. The winning team ‘Drive Train’ won the chance to attend GCHQ STEM program Grand Finals Day at Cheltenham Racecourse.  The winning teams from other local schools will then all compete against each other to win the prize of a place on an Electronic Engineering course at Portsmouth University in June 2012.  The prize is worth £175 and is fully inclusive of bed and board for 4 days and 3 nights.

The winning team (Drive Train) was the only all girl group in the activity.  Drive Train consisted of Megan Jones, Emily Domm, Danielle Screen and Aimee Bolton.  They were absolutely thrilled to win and are very excited about the upcoming GCHQ Finals.

Mrs Sutherst teacher of DT and Engineering said ‘It has been a fantastic day.  I am thrilled with the level of teamwork and fantastic designs.  The students have done themselves and their school proud.  The brilliant results provided us with a thrilling finish.’

This was an amazing opportunity for All Saints’ students and they really enjoyed the day.
