U16 Girls District 5-a-side Football Tournament
Thursday 9th February 2012 at All Saints’ Academy 3G
The impressive new Arle 3G All-Weather Pitch at All Saints’ Academy, opened by Prince Edward only a couple of months ago, was the venue for the U16 Girls District 5-a-side Football Tournament.
The ASA squad consisted of: Kerry Davis (Captain), Harmony Wheeler, Danielle Screen, Emily Domm, Sophie White, Hayleigh Jackson, Tyrana Patterson, Nicola Williams and Shannon Wooton.
The first game of the evening featured ASA and Winchcombe, in which the girls were held to a 0-0 draw. Tewkesbury School were to be All Saints’ next opponents, a game that the team went into with great confidence after beating them 5-0 in a fixture the week before. All Saints’ went ahead with great teamwork, as Emily Domm found Harmony Wheeler who knocked the ball back to Kerry Davis who hit the back of the net with a long-range shot. The team were unlucky not to increase the lead, with All Saints’ piling the pressure on the Tewkesbury defence and chances created by Harmony Wheeler. The girls cruised to a 1-0 victory, which saw the first win of the tournament after witnessing draws in all the other games so far.
In the third game of the tournament, ASA came head to head with Pittville. All Saints’ displayed a game of passing flair and effective movement, tearing holes in the Pittville defence yet failing to put the ball in the back of the net. A counter attack from Pittville saw one of their players brought down in the area resulting in a penalty. Pittville’s strongest player stepped forward to take the penalty, which seemed sure to put ASA on the back foot, however a fantastic save from Hayleigh Jackson kept the teams at a stalemate. The game ending with a 0-0 draw.
With everything left to play for in the final game of the evening, All Saints’ only needed a draw against Cheltenham Ladies College to come out as tournament winners. Kerry Davis gave All Saints’ the 1-0 lead however CLC hit back instantly to make it 1-1. It seemed sure that All Saints’ would hold CLC to a draw, but a last minute effort from CLC sealed them with the 2-1 victory and saw the Ladies College find themselves as tournament winner.
